GREAT TREASURES OF THE CHURCH

VENERABLE POPE PIUS XII and
BLESSED MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP

THE VENERABLE POPE JOHN PAUL II and
VENERABLE FATHER JERZY POPIELUSZKO MARTYR

Of the 21 Decrees of the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints published on the 19th December, 2009, four give us particular reason for celebration.Firstly, the great and beloved Pope Pius XII,so renowned for his holiness, his love of the Church and especially of the Sacred Liturgy (who could forget "Mediator Dei"?) and so cruelly maligned by some bitter Jewish groups,is now declared "Venerable". Venerable Pope Pius XII pray to God that he will deliver His holy Church from all evil.
Secondly, the second miracle attributed to Blessed Mary of the Cross Mackillop, has now been recognised. Her Cause will now be considered by a Consistory of the Sacred Congregation which could reasonably be expected to recommend to the Holy Father her Canonisation. This is a particular joy for us as Australians…

BLESSED MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP

There is being fomented in the mass media considerable hype surrounding the suggestion that Blessed Mary Mackillop is about to be announced as a candidate for Canonisation. Media reports seem to attribute these suggestions to press releases from the Sisters of St.Joseph the Order which was co-founded by Blessed Mary Mackillop and Rev Father Julian Tennyson-Woods S.J.

This spectacle of the Sisters trying to pre-empt the Holy See's announcement, if it is in fact imminent, is hardly edifying. Of course many nuns have in the last 40 years developed lifestyles quite distant from the foundational charisms of their orders. The object of the media frenzy seems to be to put a certain "spin"on the life of Blessed Mary Mackillop, consistent with the mores of her present day - dare we say- "spiritual descendants". So she is being presented as one  who fought the Church ,and likened to present day radical nuns in the U.S.A. currently resi…

by Tony Dixon

Within the hallowed walls of great Notre Dame de Paris, only a few years after its desecration during the period of the Revolution, on a cold 2nd December, 1804, the air was charged with great excitement. Thousands crammed the great Cathedral for the coronation of “the little Corporal” Napoleon Bonaparte recently declared “Emperor of the French” by the Senate of the Republic. The Pope – Pius VII – had been invited to officiate. Pius VII had agreed to officiate against the weighty advice of many of his Cardinals. The ceremony progressed to the crucial moment of coronation, when to the surprise of many; Napoleon took the Crown from the Altar and placed it upon his own head. He then took Josephine’s Crown and to…

THE BANNERS OF THE KING

BENEDICT XVI ADJUSTS THE SAILS ON PETER’S BARQUE AND SEEKS TO STRENGTHEN THE OFFICERS

The course set remains the same – toward the Master in Heaven by the most direct route. But it is obvious that the Holy Father is far from being satisfied with the way the sacred barque has been proceeding.

In the Year of St. Paul which closed on 29th June, 2009 he had us all consider the total dedication, boundless energy and zeal of St. Paul – burning with love for Christ whilst using all of his mental agility and deep learning for the spiritual good of his children in Christ. So the cry is to set more sail, and take advantage of the force of the true “Divine Wind”- the Holy Spirit of God, even as Paul did.

Just as the good mariner knows that his crew have to be trained very well if the ship is to be driven hard without coming to grief, Pope Benedict has taken the measure of his “officers” the ordained clergy. His paternal affection for them is patent. Yet he knows what the…
