ARCHDIOCESE OF BRISBANE - THE BATHERSBY YEARS - CHECKING OUR BEARINGS

ARCHBISHOP BATHERSBY - TO UNDERSTAND WHAT HE IS TRYING TO DO?
We have now reached an approximate mid-point in our consideration of the Episcopate of John Alexius Bathersby as Metropolitan Archbishop of Brisbane. One of our distinguished and exceptionally accomplished readers has asked, in effect why we are writing this project?

Well, in essence, the project is an accident. I have lived through the entire Bathersby Episcopacy, on brief occasions at the inner edges of the action , sometimes as an employee of the Archdiocese, sometimes as a target of  Archiepiscopal ire, more often as a perhaps well-informed observer, but always as a Catholic interested in the good of Christ's Church in Brisbane and far beyond. As I am approaching a major change in my life, a new phase, it occurred to me that His Grace was also approaching a final phase in his priestly and episcopal life, and that it ought to be worthwhile to consider the record.

This is doubly so, because the story of what has happened in the Archdiocese of Brisbane has been the story of the Australian Church, in many Dioceses, in the post - Conciliar period. In other places, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Lismore, Armidale for example, the cleaning up of the ecclesiastical environment has been put well in hand with great difficulty. This involved addressing  the vast deposits of the "intellectual detritus"and, one hesitates to use the word "spiritual"detritus of the 1960s ,  left behind by the Post -Conciliar "New Church" operators.Their quack psychology , iconoclasm, Rand Corporation "consultations", gutting of Religious Education and worst of all the wrecking of liturgical order and understanding, were produced by clerics who were, in some cases are, for the most part, enemies of the Church Christ founded, loves and lives with.

In Brisbane , all their mischief  remains to be undone.

So in re-tracing what Archbishop Bathersby's times have produced, we have come to hope to understand what he was trying to do, and , perhaps, to understand him and what needs to be done.

Who knows where our efforts may be read? One can only hope that somehow, in some way they may prove useful to the good of the Church in Brisbane and further afield.
