THE CHICAGO PIANO, BISHOP MICHAEL PUTNEYAND GIDEON'S ARMY

"THE CHICAGO PIANO "A WWII U.S.NAVY 1.1"RAPID FIRING ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUN
DESIGNED TO PUT UP SO MANY SHELLS AIRCRAFT COULD NOT TOUCH THE VULNERABILITIES OF THE SHIP - IT WAS LESS THAN SUCCESSFUL AS ITS HYPER SENSITIVE SHELLS OFTEN EXPLODED IN THE GUN OR NEAR IT
Deposed Bishop Morris did at least wear a tie.

The original report came from the National Catholic Reporter , America's ultra New Church organ, which give a soap-box to the likes of Sr Joan Chittister among others. The liberally inclined CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE OF AMERICA ( though less liberal than our own which is - to be euphemistic -often counter- productive) picked it up. So it has become the  vehicle for no less a figure than Bishop Michael Putney of Townsville, whose image wearing clerical garb has only recently flooded Google Images, in place of the open necked shirts and suits formerly favoured, to comment on the Australian Bishops  meeting with Cardinal Levada Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and Cardinal Ouellet Prefect  of the Congregation for Bishops'last Friday.

The purpose of that visit was to review matters arising out of the Morris deposition from the See of Toowoomba.

Here is the relevant extract from Cindy Wooden's report:

"Bishop Michael Putney of Townsville said Cardinals Ouellet and Levada" were very generous with their time", and the Australian Bishops continue to discuss the matter among themselves,"gaining greater understanding of why it happened and ideas to ensure it never happens again".
Bishop Putney said he personally believes "as Bishops we need to have immediate steps in place. When we see a Bishop acting in such a way that could lead to censure, we should have a process of mediation in place to intervene in a spirit of affective collegiality."

BISHOP PUTNEY- Clerical attire photos a recent innovation
Firstly, Bishop Putney ignores the residual role of the Metropolitan Bishop in each Province. Though greatly diminished by the 1963 revision of the Code of Canon Law, it is sufficient to provide appropriate counselling. In the Toowoomba case that would have fallen to Archbishop John Bathersby the Metropolitan concerned. The latter has repeatedly preached that "power is evil", a belief that may have caused him to avoid using it and to stay away from the wild errors of Bishop Morris. Or he may have had sympathy for Morris' heterodox views and actions - his own Advent Pastoral in 2006 (the year of Morris'horror) was also rich in error.

Secondly, Bishop Putney himself has published a Pastoral Letter on the Eucharist which contains the heretical assertion that the Eucharist is a "symbol" and studiously avoids reference to the reality of Christ's Presence in the Eucharist. It may well be that he is, and or, feels himself to be similarly at "risk"of being ""sollevato"a la Morris.

Whilst the Second Vatican Council refers to the "College of Bishops",as the Church has done over the ages, the word "Collegiality"is a post - Conciliar invention by "progressive"and "New Church" folk promoting the "Hermeneutic of Rupture"which the Holy Father has condemned so effectively. It is used to suggest an expected pattern of action  and to  promote the impression that the Church is, or ought to be, more democratic or parliamentary contraryto its Divine constitution.

THE CHICAGO PIANO
When responding to a legally trained gentleman who complained about the errors in his Pastoral on the Eucharist,  Bishop Putney wrote a long and detailed letter which brought the Chicago Piano to mind. His letter went off in all directions putting up copious quotes from Saint Thomas Aquinas -NOT TO THE POINT- and trying to keep the attack away from the heretical "symbol"comment by studiously ignoring it. The correspondence subsequently ended up with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith where, like the Chicago Piano's shells, the response no doubt blew up in the Bishop's face. No doubt the CDF are also aware of his efforts to downplay the Holy Father's Ordinariate initiative.

Queensland needs new CATHOLIC  Bishops very quickly.

The President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Archbishop Wilson of Adelaide, in whom so many placed high hopes when he was appointed some years ago, is quoted as saying "that the Australian Bishops fully recognise and accept Pope Benedict's ministry of authority over the whole Church and they are not second - guessing his action (???) , but they have an obligation to help Toowoomba Catholics move forward and to demonstrate their care for Bishop Morris( Where were they when his outrageous Pastoral was issued?)  He went on :
"
What we have to do is look at what the consequences have been, what we need to do now to bring healing and guidance to the Catholic people of Australia (!) , do all we can to maintain a proper collegial relationship with Bishop Morris (!!) and find ways in which he can continue his ministry as a Bishop in our midst, although he's no longer Bishop of Toowoomba,"the Archbishop said.(!!!)"

Well, this statement beggars the imagination. At least Archbishop Wilson has "come out"and declared where he stands - little wonder Adelaide drifts on still in the wilderness.

No-one begrudges Bishop Morris appropriate personal pastoral care. But would we allow a Bus Driver who has deliberately ignored the road rules, his employers regulations, refused to come to Head Office  mistreated and crashed the bus endangering his passengers , to return as a Bus Driver "in our midst"'? Of course not.

How much less should any sane person give thought to allowing an anointed Bishop , who has taught so greatly at variance with the Church's irefformably established doctrine, derided its discipline and shown a fundamental lack of understanding of elementary Theology  and Canon Law - and remains recalcitrant and has continued to undermine the Church in the Media and show contempt for her discipline and the true welfare of the flock he had so badly led, " continue his ministry as a Bishop in our midst"and how in the name of Goodness could faithful Catholic Bishops "maintain a proper collegial relationship" with such a person?

Perhaps it is time for Bishops who think like that, and any Archbishop who thinks like that, to "consider their position"- like Gideon's Army we might do better with fewer and certainly with newer. Whatever we might think of Bishop (Call me Brian)) Heenan he has had the decency to resign, thank Goodness.
