Saint Peter has a message for YOU and for me. It would be prudent to pay attention :
"....beloved, since you are forewarned, be on your guard not to be led into the error of the unprincipled and to fall from your own stability. But grow in grace and in the knowledge of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory now and to the day of eternity. Amen. "(From the First Reading yesterday the Tuesday of Week 9 in Ordinary Time.)
Saint Peter was concerned that some of the early Catholics( for that is what they were, even though that name for the Church would not evolve for a few decades) might grow impatient waiting for the return of the Lord, and possibly fall away from the Faith, lured away by the desire for money, or the blandishments of those in error, or even the appeal of their former pagan lifestyle.
To-day, many people suffer great economic pressures , and are tempted to follow the money away from fidelity to Christ's Church, or to succumb to the assertive immorality that rises up around us like a tide.
When the Pope send us such a message it pays to listen, lest thinking ourselves to stand ,we might fall, or even those we dearly love, might fall.
We need always to pray , and pray harder, and to "grow in grace and in the knowledge of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" .We are no better than our early Catholic forebears, though we ought to be - given 2,000 years experience and learning.
