BRISBANE AND THE HOLY SPIRIT
VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS
" COME O HOLY SPIRIT, FILL THE HEARTS OF YOUR FAITHFUL"
I have just completed a five days visit to Brisbane, where I had lived for more than twenty years until 2011. I had lived there through the latter years of Archbishop Rush's Episcopate and all but the last year or so of the Episcopate of Archbishop John Bathersby. They were sad years for the Catholic Church in Brisbane an increasingly weed -infested, even overgrown vineyard.
Yet despite all the adversity, the Holy Spirit was working in "mysterious ways" within the Archdiocese. These movements of the Holy Spirit were to finally bud up and flower when, following the retirement of Archbishop Bathersby, Archbishop Mark Coleridge came to the See of Brisbane. Fully aware of the responsibilities to teach, to sanctify and to govern, and clearly determined to shoulder them and use the powers conveyed to him through Episcopal Ordination and appointment by the Holy Father, Archbishop Coleridge has been something of a one man "culture shock" to many of the rogues who had been all too busy for years doing whatever they wished.

All the while, through the worst years, some spiritual giants were heeding the movements of the Holy Spirit and preparing for the day when their authentically Catholic teaching, worship and practice could proceed without impediment.
FATHER GREGORY JORDAN S.J.
"THE GOOD JESUIT"
Among these, most notably, is the marvellous Father Greg Jordan S.J. His range of pastoral activities has long been exceptional : Chaplain to the burgeoning Latin Mass Community - perhaps the youngest Catholic community in the Archdiocese, Catechist to Brisbane State High School, National Chaplain to the Australian Catholic Students Association, conductor of Catechism of the Catholic Church training courses, Leader of Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, Spiritual Director for numerous individuals, Chaplain to the FAITH ON TAP apostolate which is so successful in Brisbane, and Official Exorcist of the Archdiocese and mentor to numerous Home Schoolers and other groups. At 86 years of age, it is no wonder he is called by many “The Good Jesuit".
FRASSATI MINISTRIES - VERSO L ALTO
MASS IS ON ALTERNATE WEEKS EXTRAORDINARY AND ORDINARY ( AD ORIENTEM) FORM
Also, a year or so before Archbishop Bathersby folded his Mitre and headed for retirement among the apples of his native Stanthorpe, a group of young Catholic men of strong orthodox Faith and practice came together to share a home, share their study of Sacred Scripture, and began to serve the Sacred Liturgy with the greatest skill , devotion and reverence possible. Their activity - whilst they maintained their normal careers, attracted the attention of their peers and in time they had four houses in operation. They had, early in the piece, taken Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati as their Patron and had adopted the style "Frassati Ministries" for their activities which grew strongly. We will be bringing you a detailed post covering FRASSATI MINISTRIES in the coming days. Be assured that this is an important work of the Holy Spirit with an undoubtedly Grace- filled future.
BIRMINGHAM ORATORY - THE NAVE
BL. JOHN HENRY CARDINAL NEWMAN MADE BIRMINGHAM
THE EFFECTIVE CENTRE OF CATHOLIC REVIVAL IN
THE ENGLAND OF HIS TIME
Also, it has been officially announced, that Archbishop Coleridge has approved the plans developed within the Archdiocese, apparently upon the initiative of one or two orthodox Priests, for the establishment of an Oratory in Brisbane. As we have previously announced it will be established in 2014/15 and have a total of four Priests (including some from interstate) and two Seminarians who will proceed to study in an Oratory Seminary overseas, in September of this year. The Graces which will flow from the ministry of these Oratorians will be incalculable and provide a centre for Catholic spiritual excellence in the virtual desert that Brisbane has been.

AND 15 NIGERIAN PRIESTS SERVING IN BRISBANE ARCHDIOCESE
But the most extraordinary work of the Holy Spirit, having marvellous effect in the Archdiocese, can be traced back some years and, extraordinarily, the instrument used was none other than Archbishop John Bathersby. It was he who concluded an agreement with Bishop Lucius Ogorji of Umuahia Nigeria, to send Seminarians here to complete their training at Holy Spirit Seminary and remain either permanently or for a fixed number of years. In addition a number of Priests from the same Diocese have come to Brisbane to work permanently. The impact of these devout, highly educated men with their manly bearing, humour, love of life and love of the Church, and dedication to Christ, has been like applying electronic stimulation paddles to a person in cardiac arrest. Everyone in the Archdiocese ought praise God for the great grace of their presence, indeed the whole of the Church in Australia ought to thank God for their bringing the moribund church of Brisbane a great surge of new life in Christ. And let us not forget Archbishop Bathersby whose co-operation with the Holy Spirit in this matter - so much at odds with much he had done - has no doubt gone far to compensate for much that went before and even after. Look out for our coming post to mark the Episcopal Visitation by Bishop Lucius Ogorji to his Priests and Seminarians.
IN THE BEGINNING - THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN UMUAHIA AND BRISBANE
ARCHBISHOP BATHERSBY AND BISHOP LUCIUS OGORJI OF UMUAHIA
The personal activity of His Grace Archbishop Mark Coleridge has had a remarkable effect in the Diocese. Liturgical abuse in the Cathedral has been brought to an end. And it would seem that the artistic and architectural abuse in the Cathedral and the adjoining Saint Stephen's Chapel have not gone unnoticed, and are to be addressed. Alleluia! Alleluia! Anyone familiar with Saint Stephen's and the Chapel will know the problems. In due course we will bring our readers a full report on what was, what is and what's to be done.
He has also taken his own bold initiative to boost the numbers of sound clergy, by negotiating the arrival of a number of Syro- Malabar
Rite Priests from India, who are actually bi-ritual and so obviously able to celebrate Mass according to the Ordinary Form. Observers have commented favourably on their devotion, education and excellence in pastoral activity.

In the Media His Grace has been markedly successful. Rather than keeping his head down below the parapet, he is often the one to contact the Media even on talkback Radio - actually calling in, to the great surprise of the radio hosts who know little truth about the Catholic Church, and who in any case, are flattered by the idea that the Archbishop of Brisbane, thinks to call in on their program. Of course anyone with a body of Truth to propose and defend is in for a rough time pursuing the media in this way. Whilst every appearance by His Grace might not be judged a triumph by some, all in all he has far more strongly positive results than otherwise.
Vocations are growing very healthily and the further expansion of Holy Spirit Seminary appears imminent.
There remains a great deal to be done in Brisbane. One need only mention the scandalous teaching at Australian Catholic University and at Brisbane Catholic Schools . There is very much change to be managed in these areas. Early action is already in train, but specific details of it of it might be counter-productive at this stage.
There is a NEW BRISBANE with a new surge of vibrant AUTHENTIC CATHOLICISM pulsing through its arteries, a surge so powerful that it is possible to look forward to the church of Brisbane regaining the standing it held in the time of Archbishop Duhig in his heyday. And all for the greater glory of God.
