HE TURNED THE TIDE - BISHOP A HERO OF GOD

Image
THE POWER OF ONE
He never did look like a Super Hero but when Bishop William Brennan was ordained Priest on 21st December, 1960 by Cardinal Agaginian ,for the now enfeebled vacant See of Wilcannia-Forbes, few could have guessed that the young man prostrate before before the Altar would quietly turn the history of the Catholic Church in Australia right about.

On 1st March, 1984 William Brennan was consecrated Bishop of the Diocese of Wagga Wagga , by Cardinal Clancy then  Archbishop of Sydney ,with Archbishop Luigi Barbarito (Apostolic Pro- Nuncio)and Archbishop Carroll Auxiliary of Sydney as Co-Consecrators. I doubt that they would have guessed even at that stage what the practical results of that Sacramental act would be.

The Diocese of Wagga Wagga was erected on 28th July, 1917 toward the latter part of the first World War.It was carved out of the Diocese of Goulburn as it was.By the time of Bishop Brennan's Consecration, The Diocese had near 24,000 Catholics out of a total popula…

ONE YEAR AGO TO-DAY A BLESSING FOR BRISBANE

Exhausted no doubt , and jet -lagged,  six Seminarians upon their arrival in Brisbane from the Diocese of Umuahia, Nigeria on this day, 22nd July, 2012.

A year has passed. a year in which they have settled in and steadily come to know their entirely new surroundings. It can't have been easy for them. They came from a country with a strong cultural heritage and particularly so amongst their own Igbo ( pronounced Ibo as near as we are likely to get it)people. Moreover they come from a strongly intact Catholic culture, of a vigour probably unmatched here, even before the Second Vatican Council. In addition their former Seminary Seat of Wisdom Seminary, Owerri was very large , with well over 500 Seminarians.

So these men for the vineyard gave up a very great deal to come here - and that is without mentioning the fundamental wrench of leaving parents, family and friends and their beloved Country for Christ's sake and the good of the Archdiocese of Brisbane.

During the recent visit of Bi…

CURIAL REFORM - ANOTHER LEVER - POPE FRANCIS ACTS

Image
Pope Francis has announced the appointment of a new Pontifical Commission for Reference, composed  of lay experts with a Priest acting as Secretary Co-Ordinator " who has the powers of a delegate and acts on behalf of the Commission, collecting documents, data and the information necessary for the fulfilment of its institutional functions."

The heart of the Chirograph is quoted here:

"We have decided to establish a Commission for reference to gather accurate information on economic questions regarding the Vatican Administrations and to co-operate with the aforementioned Council of Cardinals in its valuable work, offering the technical support of specialist advice and developing strategic solutions for improvement, so as to avoid the misuse of economic resources, to improve transparency in the processes of purchasing goods and services; to refine the administration of goods and real estate; to work with ever greater prudence in the financial sphere; to ensure the correct a…

AUSTRALIA FILE FOUND AT LAST!

Image
Now Archbishop Julian Porteous

Readerswill recall our post :http://vexilla-regis.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/pope-francis-governing.html   in which we once again drew attention to the lack of action on Episcopal vacancies in Australia  and the several Bishops serving well beyond their retirement dates including the Archbishop of Hobart.

The Holy Father has appointed Julian Porteous until now Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney to replace Archbishop Doyle in Hobart.

No doubt about it, Archbishop Porteous as he will be, will be an excellent appointment  for the Capital city of the island State of Tasmania. We congratulate him heartily , but note the disappointment of many, that he will no longer be available to replace Bishop David Walker of Broken Bay who retires in 115 days.

At last we know that Cardinal Ouellet's "AUSTRALIA" File has been found  - having lamented its apparent loss in our Post only 3 days ago! Some of our readers…

"FINDING JESUS" FUNDAMENTALIST EXPERIENCES

Image
I had a very interesting conversation over a light lunch the other day with another friend and a Priest recently returned from travelling for some time. In the course of a wide-ranging discussion, Father mentioned encountering some college friends who had abandoned the Faith because they had " discovered Jesus" in a fundamentalist "Christian " sect.In the conversation the emphasis was on his sorrow at seeing these folk slide away from the Faith.

Later, it came back to my mind, when I was reading some Meditations on the Life of Christ ( Father Nicola Avancini S.J.). Have these folk , who have abandoned Jesus' Mystical Body - the Catholic Church , really "discovered Jesus?

We are of course not talking about some merely human founder of an organisation, or some mere philosopher . No we are talking about God made Man. The God/Man Who said of Himself :

"4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neith…

POPE FRANCIS GOVERNING

Image
If nothing else, Pope Francis has drawn an unusual amount of attention to question of how one goes about being Pope. This is an area of Catholic life that had only  evolved very gradually over time until His Holiness burst upon the scene. And " burst" is an apt term, for his arrival has produced a rolling series of novelties that has never ceased to surprise and even disconcert very many people. But there are things that even the Pope must do for the good of the Church, things that cannot be " done my way" to use the Frank Sinatra term.

One of these is the appointment of Bishops whose Communion with him as Successor of Saint Peter, is their guarantee of remaining within the Catholic Church.

After some tedious research we have been able to summarise the Appointments Made and Resignations Accepted from the Holy Father's  election up to two days ago, as follows:

Latin America    27 (includes 10 Argentinians [incl 1 Maronite])
North America    9
Europe               30

HOLY SPIRIT SEMINARY BULGING AT THE SEAMS

Image
Here is Bishop Anthony Fisher's fascinating Homily at the Blessing of his Diocese' new Seminary some weeks ago in May of this year :
There is a delicious irony in young men discerning their vocations, along with leading lay people, seminarians, clergy and bishop gathering here today to bless a new seminary building. The first owner of this land, after God and its Aboriginal custodians, the builder of Kenilworth, was Mr Jack McCreedie. A wealthy merchant and amateur astronomer, he went to great lengths to keep the good Lord out of here, even declaring in his will that no portion of it could ever be associated with the Church of Rome and its popish pomps. Yet here we are.

When McCreedie’s land went up for auction in 1926, a group of Catholics, led by the parish priest of Granville, Rev Dr PJ Sheehy, successfully raised the funds to buy it. Fr Sheehy then invited the Sisters of Mercy to inhabit the precinct, so they might have an outpost from their Parramatta convent, and co…

LOOKING BACK 41 YEARS AND AHEAD 1 YEAR
NE
Pope Paul VI in General Audience in 1969 , concerning the revised liturgy: "We may notice that pious persons will be the ones most disturbed, because, having their respectable way of listening to Mass, they will feel distracted from their customary thoughts and forced to follow those of others............Not Latin, but the spoken ( vernacular)language, will be the main language of the Mass. To those who know the beauty, the power, the expressive sacrality of Latin, its replacement by the vulgar language is a great sacrifice : we lose the discourse of the Christian centuries, we become almost intruders and desecrators ( intrusi e profani) in the literary space of sacred expression, and we will thus lose a great portion of that…
