ECCE QUI TOLLIT PECCATA MUNDI !
If our beloved Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI ( now Emeritus) did nothing else in his entire Pontificate - and he did a very great deal more - the signing of the Motu Proprio " Summorum Pontificum" on this day six years ago, was sufficient to earn him a privileged place in History.
With that " stroke of the pen " he righted a great wrong which had wounded the heart of the church for 38 years, since the introduction of the Novus Ordo in 1969. That earlier action had broken the hearts of many devout Priests and Lay folk, as they were wrongly compelled to abandon the Mass their ancestors had known for a thousand years or more, the Mass as most of the saints in Heaven had celebrated it.
In the six years since it came into effect, Summorum Pontificum has been a splendid success.Freeing all Priests to celebrate Mass according to the 1962 Missal at will, it has ( despite some bitter Bishop "hold-outs")vastly increased the extent of the availability of the Latin Mass, which has grown remarkably and the number of young Priests teaching themselves or being trained in it celebration, has grown immensely. And the developing Congregations are amazing for their youth - with relatively low average ages.
Pope Benedict's desire that its wider use should serve to spread the sense of the sacred is indeed working and we have heard some very encouraging stories of "conversions" of heart in that regard.
So Happy Re-Birthday to the Extraordinary Form.
And profound thanks to our beloved Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
