NOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH A CHURCH ?

Image
The above photograph is not unpleasant. The Highway passes immediately to the rear of the church as shown here. The "V" shaped roof skylight is a modernistic stained glass window of a red and orange abstract pattern which may symbolise fire or  something, and is situated above the area in front of the Altar.

The interior of the church- note carefully the
Tabernacle perched on the extreme right.

It seems that the architects had taken little trouble to study Catholic  church architecture and or, were very badly briefed.

The property has direct frontage to the busy Pacific Highway, but because the land slopes away from the Highway , cut and fill procedures were adopted and the church is not visible from the Highway. No doubt the Municipal authorities would not have been happy about any request for access and egress from and to the Highway, but physical presence to the Highway would have been an importa…

"THE URGE......TO RUN OUT OF THE CHURCH AND FIND A MONASTERY TO ENTER...."

Sunday Mass ...how heavily those words are freighted with significance for the faithful Catholic - memories even from earliest childhood, encounters with the Presence of God, inspirations and consolations in times of trouble, the joy of the company of friends and family in public worship, intimacy with Jesus Himself in Holy Communion, prayers to our Blessed Mother and favoured Saints, all these things come tumbling to mind.

BUT...this morning we had the grave misfortune to attend the monthly so-called "Family Mass" which previous experiences have led us to avoid. The customary advance warning was not given by my daughter who had overlooked it due to her busy family life.

All the usual suspects were there, with their Piano, Xylophone, Tambourine, Trumpet , gaunt insipid  no longer young men, the schoolteacherish young woman with head swinging long blonde hair, the dear little children doing the readings in high-pitched unintelligible fashion ( "Isn't he/she just sooooo c…

Father Paul W. Chandler at present Parish Priest of Banyo Nundah Parish is announced as the first of the Priests involved in the Oratory Project whose name has been made public. There are three others whose names are as yet withheld so as not to compromise their present pastoral assignments, since the Project's development will progress only slowly toward 2015/2016.

As we have already reported the first Oratory Seminarian Shawn Murphy has already commenced his studies at the Oratorian Seminary in Canada.

We urge you to visit the Website, examine it in detail , see how you might be able to assist , especially through your prayers. And it would be good to contact Father Chandler through the Website and let him know of your support - do it NOW please. Good P…

" WHAT IS A CHURCH?"

Image
Last year in the Winter Edition of "The Priest" -the quarterly publication of the Australian Confraternity of Catholic Clergy - Bishop Geoffrey Jarrett of Lismore in northern New South Wales, wrote two articles one of which was entitled " Liturgy and Evangelisation". A long time maember of the Confraternity, His Lordship had also been its Chairman for a number of years. He is a convert from Anglicanism, having been an Anglican cleric for some years he " swam the Tiber" in 1965.

The Bishop's article in one part raises the question :" what is a church?" In addressing the question he turns to the Anglican architect and writer Sir John Ninian Comper(1864-1960) .

Noting that Comper was not a prolific writer, Bishop Jarrett refers to his little book " On the Atmosphere of a Church" (1947) re-published in 2006 with an Introduction by Father Anthony Symondson S.J. He also notes that the renowned Father Aidan Nichols O.P. demonstrated  presen…

POPE FRANCIS GOVERNING II ALL HIS OWN WORK

Pope Francis Governing II
All his own work

An interesting insight into the inner workings of Pope Francis' effective personal Curia has been given by famed Italian journalist Sandro Magister in the Italian magazine L'Espresso.
Magister points out that the Holy Father seems in no hurry to effect immediate change within the institutional Curia which continues about its business. The group of Cardinals appointed by the Holy Father to assist him in the reform of the Curia will not meet until October. However it is well known that one member at least, Cardinal George Pell, has spent a considerable time in Rome since being nominated as a member of the Group. No doubt others have been similarly occupied.
Meanwhile Pope Francis has gathered about him his own mini parallel "Curia" which Magister terms the "Segretariola" - a term once applied to a similar group formed by Pope Saint Pius X when he found problems within the Curia proper.
The members of Pope Francis' mi…

A surprising novelty is reported by Sandro Magister in his CHIESA BLOG:

Groundbreaking: The Last Warning to the Pope's Electors The official bulletin of the Holy See has lifted the secrecy from the meditation dictated to the cardinals at the beginning of the last conclave, with the doors already closed. Here are the essential passages

by Sandro Magister

ROME, August 13, 2013 – The Holy See has an official bulletin entitled “Acta Apostolicae Sedis." It is written in Latin, while the documents reproduced there are in the original languages. Its issues can be read on the Vatican website beginning with that of 1909:

> Acta Apostolicae Sedis

Since 2003 it has been issued in monthly booklets with the pages numbered starting in January. The latest booklet taken to press is also the first of Francis's pontificate:

> Acta Apostolicae Sedis, 5 aprilis - 3 Maii 2013

It contains among other things the proceedings of the conclave that on March 13, 2013 elected pope Jorge Mario Bergogli…
