COUNCIL OF CARDINALS - WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT POPE FRANCIS' CHOSEN 8 ?

The composition of the Council of Cardinals has been announced as representing the major population areas and continents of the globe. Its members our readers will recall , are:
Francisco Javier Errazuriz Cardinal OSSA
Archbishop Emeritus of Santiago de Chile

Ranked No. 84 in the Sacred College of Cardinals, Cardinal Ossa was born on 5th September, 1933 and having achieved 80 years of age is no longer a Cardinal Elector. He was made a Cardinal by Bl.Pope John Paul II on 21st February, 2001.Accordingly, he is the most Senior of the Cardinals chosen.

He is a Schoenstatt Father .He was elected Superior General of the Order in 1974,and re-elected in 1980 and again in 1986.In 1990 he was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life .This gives him first hand knowledge of the workings of the Roman Curia.

His chosen Episcopal Motto is " Ut Vitam Habeunt" ( "That they Might Have Life").His titular church in Rome is S. Maria della Pace.

Oscar Andres Rodriguez Cardinal Maradiaga S.D.B.
Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Ranked 87th in the College of Cardinals -he is a Cardinal Priest. Cardinal Maradiaga was born on 29th December, 1942 and made a Cardinal by Bl. Pope John Paul II on 21st February ,2001 and remains a Cardinal Elector. 

Cardinal Maradriaga is a Salesian, and he is President of the Honduran Catholic Bishops Conference. He is also President of the Caritas Internationalis and its global representative for the next two years.He has been a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education since 2012.He has served as the Holy See's spokesman before the IMF and the World Bank on the subject of Third World Debt. 

His record appears to have been generally conservative.

The Cardinal's Episcopal Motto is "Mihi Vivere Christus Est" ("For me to live is Christ"), and his titular church in Rome is S. Maria Della Speranza.

The Holy Father has appointed him " Co-ordinator" of the Council. Both the Cardinal and the Holy Father share Spanish as their native tongue as well as the Latin -American cultural background.

                                Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney with Pope Francis
Ranked 110 in the sacred College of Cardinals,  George Cardinal Pell is a Cardinal Priest. He was born on the 8th June, 1941 and made a Cardinal by Bl. Pope John Paul II on 21st October, 2003.He has been Archbishop of Sydney since 2001.He has for many yeas been first a Consultor and then a Member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and for 10 years a Member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith  and he was Chairman of the international Vox Clara Committee which oversaw the correction of the English language translation of the Order of Mass.He has had extensive involvement in Seminary and Diocesan Education.In 2012 he was appointed to the Congregation of Bishops as a Member. He proposed and secured and saw to successful completion, World Youth Day in Sydney in 2008. He is a figure of National standing in Australian political and social life.

Cardinal Pell is characteristically direct and to the point in what he says and did not hesitate to make clear his unfavourable view of the precedent - effect of Pope Benedict XVI's Retirement, and to decry the lack of support shown by some around the Holy Father .

Cardinal Pell's Episcopal Motto is " Nolite Timere" ( " Be not Afraid") and his titular church is S.Maria Domenica Mazzarello.


                                  Cardinal Sean Patrick  O'Malley O.F.M.Cap. Archbishop of Boston

Ranked No. 122 in the Sacred College of Cardinals, Cardinal O'Malley is a Cardinal Priest and Cardinal Elector. He was born on 29th June, 1944 and was made Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in March, 2006.

He took over the much-troubled Archdiocese of Boston in July, 2003 succeeding Cardinal Law upon whom much opprobrium was heaped as the extent of the sexual abuse crisis in the Archdiocese became clear. Cardinal O'Malley has not only had to deal with the aftermath of that but also manage a massive re-structuring of the Parishes in the Archdiocese , closing some 65 Parishes and their churches. He has also had to deal with the historic links between Church leaders in the Archdiocese and the ruling Democratic Party.And these difficulties became crystal clear when the Cardinal officiated at the Funeral Service of the nominally Catholic Senator Edward Kennedy who had actively campaigned in favour of pro-Abortion legislation - greatly scandalising many people in the process.

Cardinal O'Malley is a Member of the the Congregation for Clergy, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and a member of the Presidential Council of the Pontifical Council for the Family.

He also is a Blogger - the first Cardinal to enter the lists in this field.

Cardinal O'Malley's Episcopal Motto is " Quodcumque dixerit facite" ( "Do whatever He tells you.") and his titular church in Rome is S.Maria della Vittoria. 

Cardinal Oswald Gracias
Archbishop of Bombay
Ranked No. 131 in the Sacred College of Cardinals, Cardinal Gracias isa Cardinal Priest and a Cardinal Elector. He was born on 24th October , 1944 and made a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in November, 2007. He has been Archbishop of Bombay since 2006.

He has been Secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India and President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (Latin Rite).He is a Member of the Pontifical Council for Legislative texts, and a Member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.And he has been elected Secretary-General of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences.He is also a Member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, the Congregation for Catholic Education and was one of the Papally appointed Synod Fathers in 2012.

His Episcopal Motto is " To reconcile all things in Christ" and his Titular church is S. Paolo della Croce a " Corviale".

Laurent Monsengwo Cardinal Pasinyo
Archbishop of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Ranked No. 138 in the Sacred College of Cardinals, Cardinal Pasinya was born on 7th October, 1939 . He is a Cardinal Priest and still a Cardinal Elector. He was made a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI on 20th November, 2010. He has been Archbishop of Kinshasa since December, 2007.

In the mid 1990s whilst he was Metropolitan Archbishop of Kisangani, he received a political appointment in a national emergency - as President of the Sovereign National Conference convened to oversee the transition from the failing Dictator Mobutu Sese Seko (1991) then President of the High Council of the Republic (1992) and Speaker of theTransitional Parliament (1994).Since November, 2007 he has been serving as  Co-President of Pax Christi International.

He is a Member of the Congregation for Catholic Education, and of the Pontifical Council for Culture , and of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications and the Congregation for the Evangelisation of the Peoples. In 2011 he preached the Lenten Exercises to Pope Benedict and the Roman Curia.

The Cardinal's Episcopal Motto is "In fide veritatis" ( " In faith of the truth"{literally} Perhaps "In the true faith" is intended?) and his titular church is S. Maria "Regina Pacis" in Ostia Mare.
Reinhard Cardinal Marx
Archbishop of Munich and Freising

Ranked No. 144 in the Sacred College of Cardinals, Cardinal Marx is a Cardinal Priest and a Cardinal Elector. He was born on 21st September, 1953 and made a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI on 20th November, 2010. He has been Archbishop of Munich and Freising since November , 2007.

The cardinal is  a Member of the Congregation for Catholic Education and a Member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. He is also a Member of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. In 2012 he was elected as President of the Commission of the  Bishops Conferences of the European Community.

Cardinal Marx' Episcopal Motto is "Ubi Spiritus Domini Ibi Libertas"  (" Where there is the Spirit of the Lord , there is Liberty") and hi stitular church in Rome is S. Corbiniano ( Saint Corbinian was the first Bishop of Munich - Freising{ A.D. 723 - 730}).


Giuseppe Cardinal Bertello
Ranked No.193 in the Sacred College of Cardinals,,Giuseppe Bertello is a Cardinal Deacon and a Cardinal Elector. He was born on 1st October, 1941 and made a Cardinal on 18th February 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.
He is President of the Governatorate of Vatican City State and President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State. From the time of his Episcopal Ordination in 1987 he has been in the Holy See's Diplomatic Service around the world until he took up his present Appointment in 2011.

His Episcopal Motto is " Narrabo nomen tuum"("I will tell Your Name")and his titular church in Rome is Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia.

Apologies to all the Bean Farmers , Counters and Eaters! As the Labels showed we had taken His Eminence into account in our research, but in the posting process he " fell between the cracks" . But as you now see he is restored to his due place!Sincere thanks Juniper!
