"WHAT IS TRUTH?" PONTIUS PILATE REDUX

Image
Mention the name Pontius Pilate, and the most rapid word association for most people is "washing his hands". No doubt his failure to free Our Lord, whom he believed to be without fault, was the gravest injustice in the history of the World , because it was done to God Himself made Man.

Without diminishing that horror by one iota, I think we should accord Pilate great responsibility for putting a finger on one of the main issues of all human history. The issue was critically important then , and it is robustly so to-day.

BACKGROUND

I came to think about this matter in a three step process. For some years now, my Lenten reading has been "The Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ"by the late Archbishop Alban Goodier S.J. In it, Archbishop Goodier leads us very carefully through the scenes of Jesus before Pontius Pilate. He recounts the troubled history of Pilate's term in office which had already seen him in trouble with Rome. He was by no means free to act in a …

2016 THERE'S NO GETTING AWAY FROM IT!

I guess the approach of a  Birthday does it!  This post first appeared on 8th April ,2016.

Try as you may, there IS no getting away from it.

But, undaunted, the Greek Philosopher Epicurus ( 341 B.C. to 270.B.C.) took a pot shot at the phenomenon and tried to get people to avoid any undue panic. here is his take on the situation :

"Death is nothing in us,
  since when we are,
  death has not come,
  and when death has come,
  we are not."

Neatly stated.

Some 2,200 years later the Austrian - British Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein ( 1889- 1951) thought he would have a shot at expanding consideration of the point :

" Death is not an event in life:
we do not live to experience death.

If we take Eternity to mean not infinite temporal duration but
timelessness, then eternal life belongs to those who live in the
   present.

Our life has no end in the way in which our visual field has no limits."

In typical Wittgensteinian fashion he has succeeded in  wrecking the elegance…

2017 SOCIAL COMMENTARY :LOOK! LOOK AT WHAT THE MASS MEDIA IS HIDING

Image
How can I get you to read something that has all the triggers that would normally turn you off? Strange names, unfamiliar subject matter? Far away troubled places? People in dire trouble?

I could show you shocking pictures But you would turn away. I could show you charming, delightful pictures, but you would think I was appealing for money, and turn away.

Let me try to give you some simple background to make the strange names less forbidding, that will make the subject matter less unfamiliar, that will open your eyes and minds to a brilliant, charming and energetic people and their plight. No I won't try to shock you, I hate that sort of image too, nor will I swamp you with saccharine images. And I certainly won't be asking you for money.

THE SCENE

The scene is AFRICA. And NO - it is not the "dark continent" . Rather it is a world in itself- colourful and bright with rolling plains and lofty mountains, vast sand deserts , thousands of miles of coastline, and, yes you can …

CHRIST AND ECUMENISM -"AGAINST US" AND "FOR US"

CHRIST AND ECUMENISM  -"AGAINST US" AND "FOR US"

The Gospel of the Mass of Thursday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time (Year 1) is amongst the shortest we encounter in the three year cycle : Mark 9: 38-40. It concludes with Jesus saying to Saint John : "....Anyone who is not against us is for us". This is said in the context of the disciples trying to stop a non-disciple driving out devils in the Lord's Name, and Jesus telling them that they must not stop him.

This passage has, in recent years, led some homilists to proceed from this  statement to say that it means that Catholics should be more open to the good works done by other Christian "communities"But is this a proper analysis of the passage?

Who?

" Anyone who is not against us...." clearly Jesus is excluding people who would oppose His teachings when He uses the words " against us", from acting in His Name.

As Catholics, we are blessed with the fullness of Christ'…
